An antiquarian Thomasina Bateman is writing a book on the barrows that are found in England and is documenting the treasures she uncovers in the. When an intriguing letter summons her to the tiny village of Bewlay located within the countryside in the far distance, she embarks on train, with her companion one day late.
The mysterious figure who called her to help is absent upon her arrival. Her assistant never arrives. An uncompromising landowner denies access to the barrow and even the residents are wary of this lady walking on her own also (gasp!) wears trousers.
Hob’s Barrow excavation is off to a bumpy starting point. It is then that Thomasina starts having strange dreams…
